Is driving stress ruining your life? Apparently it is...

Higher blood pressure, anxiety, sickness, resentment, worry, and fear are all linked to driving... And it gets worse.

Driving stress has been a point of discussion of many psychotherapist in the recent past. Many say that it helps them de-stress but Many Psychologist believe otherwise. Many of us Know that driving while stressed increases the risks of getting into an accident. But Research has shown that It's much worse, driving has been shown to lower job and life satisfaction is certain studies.

The impacts of driving stress for some time..

Although the stress of driving has been known for a long time, Serious studies related to it has been only conducted in recent times.  Research from German, British, American, and Canadian institutions collected live data from drivers and found higher levels of many stress indicators.  Higher heart rates, blood pressure, anxiety.  Further studies also showed more driving correlated with more sick days and appearances in the hospital.

Your car commute is lowering your happiness

An Article in Time Magazine provided a list of issues that may arise due to this daily commute, apart from the issues talked before research ahs shown that driving can lead to increase in blood sugar,Cholestrol and depression risk. The article also noted a marked drop in fitness levels and sleep quality. This isn't even the tip of the iceberg, the U.K. Office of National Statistics recently released a research analyisis on the impact of driving.  In their words, “From the data analysis, it appears that commuters have lower life satisfaction, a lower sense that their daily activities are worthwhile, lower levels of happiness and higher anxiety on average than non-commuters. Average happiness levels begin to fall and anxiety levels begin to rise after the first 15 minutes of the commute to work. Then, the worst effects of commuting on personal well-being are experienced on average by those whose journey to work lasts between 61 and 90 minutes.”

Your driving stress doesn’t just impact you and those close to you…

Some Research has shown that driving leads to short temper often called road rage. research has shown that the more you drive, the less tolerant or patient you become, It also is directly proportional to loss in productivity, Increased lost days, increased late arrivals and decreased Job Satisfaction.

So What are the causes of driving stress??

According to research summarized in the book Urban Planning and Public Health, traffic jam, construction, and long driving distances are key stressors.  In specific, it’s the elements of unpredictability and loss of control they present drivers.  Regarding loss of control, Jeffrey Tumlin (author of Sustainable Transportation Planning) provides some insight.  He notes that when we are walking, we have the ability to communicate with those around us with hundreds of subtle social cues.  In a car, we only have two – blinkers and horn.  And since they don’t always communicate what you want, people have to bottle the accompanying stress and release it some other way.

New in The City of Mumbai

Amit was New in town he had just landed a big gig as a departmental head at one of the biggest MNCs. Now he was earlier located at Delhi and had no experience being in the city of Mumbai. He and his wife had moved into Hiranandani in powai while his office was located in BKC. Amit and his wife Nalini were having an argument over amit being too devoted to work.

"Amit you no longer time for me all you do is work nowadays, you were not like this before. We used to go out in the weekends and go to the movies during the week; nowadays you tend to bring in your work to home."

"Nalini you don’t understand I need to put in the extra effort to make sure that I get the hang of the job. On top of that you know I drive to work and it takes me almost one hour of drive each ways to reach office it really drains me out after that I have little strength left to do anything else."

"I know but your personal life is also important don’t you think, the kids are also getting fussy as we have not gone out much after moving to the city."

"So what do you want me to do quit my job."
"No I don't want you to do that I just want you to make some time for us too."
"Well I am trying but it’s a new job and it will take me some time to get used to the processes."

"Fine at least don’t bring work home do it while you are at office or in your car."

"In the car are you crazy! I am driving the damn car I can’t do anything else."

"So find someone else to drive your car."

"Don't you think I have thought of that, of hiring a personal driver, so that I can do some work in the car too? But these driver agencies just keep giving me leads and expect me to talk to the drivers. I don't have time for that."

"If you are really ready to hire a driver then I have a solution, I just came across this driver hiring service called SAAARTHI.COM, which does all the work from selecting to discussing salary with the drivers. You just need to meet the driver to test his driving skills."

"Really but where did you learn of it?"

"One of my colleagues at work just used this service and she was really happy with it. "

"So do you think we should give it a try??"

"Sure why not if they can really save me the time."
